Back to Basics – January Edition III

Hello and welcome to another edition of Back to Basics, where we take a look back at the accomplishments that Girls’ Generation has achieved and also at some minor details that I feel are important and fun to know as a SONE. This edition will cover the month of January 2012. If you have missed the previous editions for this month or would like to do a little bit of rereading, click here for the years 2008 to 2010 and here for the year 2011. There is never too much to read when it comes to our favorite girls!
K-Pop has become an international force around the world, and it’s no surprise that Girls’ Generation has a lot to do with the success of the ever-expanding Hallyu wave. Even though the girls could have stayed content with their status as South Korea’s national girl group and their rising popularity in Asia, they took a chance with an attempt at breaking into the American market. To critics, it was a ridiculous notion to fit in where Girls’ Generation didn’t belong. To some fans, it was a risk they should have never taken. But for Girls’ Generation, it was a step in a direction to be the best that they can be. It is no mere coincidence that they have arrived at a destination where no other girl group could have ever imagined to have reached. This is what sets them apart from the rest; they dared to be different. In the impervious world of K-Pop, where predictable standards are dictated by unchanging societal trends, artists have a tendency to take comfort in the familiar, simply because it is easy. Think about it; if Girls’ Generation had followed the crowd, the crowd would have never regarded them as examples to follow.
2012: There were always hard times, but I was able to overcome those hard times because of my members. I’m thankful to my members. -Tiffany

With the recent release of “The Boys”, Girls’ Generation began to inch their way into the United States. Who would have ever thought that American radios and television programs would feature Girls’ Generation and their music? I, for one, never did.
Girls’ Generation was able to release a U.S. special album, which contains remixes from their digital extended play (EP) and the songs from the original Korean album, “The Boys”. “The Boys” physical album placed second on Billboard’s “World Albums” chart and took the 22nd spot on the “Heatseekers Albums” chart. The highlight of their promotion in the United States, albeit a short promotion, was when Girls’ Generation arrived in New York City for a fansign event and to tape performances of “The Boys” on two popular American shows, “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “LIVE! with Kelly”. “The Late Show with David Letterman” aired on January 31st. Even though it may not have been the widespread success that they had hoped for, they were still moments that Girls’ Generation can be proud of.

On January 30th, Sunny completed her second run as “Brenda” for the musical “Catch Me If You Can” with two outstanding performances, one at 4:00 PM KST and another later at 8:00 PM KST. After holding her first stage on December 15th, Sunny finished her final show after over a month and a half of performances.

A small event was prepared with pink lightsticks and a banner that read, “As expected, Kyurenda is the best!!”. The banner is a play on Girls’ Generation’s own popular phrase, “As expected, SONEs are the best!!”, which they have been saying to fans during the weekly music shows. May 12th of last year marked the end of Sunny’s successful debut as “Brenda” and this time around, she again showed her dedication and talent that fans have come to recognize and adore.
With “Catch Me If You Can” coming to a close, as well as Girls’ Generation’s “I Got A Boy” promotions ending soon, the girls are preparing for their highly anticipated second Japanese tour, with the first concert being held February 9th in Kobe. Nonetheless, SONEs everywhere want to congratulate Sunny once again for reprising the role of “Brenda” in amazing performances of “Catch Me If You Can”.

Shukan Bunshun reports AKB48’s Minegishi Minami spent the night at Shirahama Alan’s place

On the latest issue of “Shukan Bunshun” (BUNGEISHUNJU Ltd.) that was published on January 31st (JST), it was reported that AKB48’s Minegishi Minami spent the night at Shirahama Alan’s place on the 17th of this month.
Shirahama is a popular member of GENERATIONS that made a major debut last year as EXILE’s “little brother” group. He has appeared on some dramas like “GTO” and “Rokudenashi BLUES” last year, and he also starred in late-night drama “Sugarless.”
Minegishi and Shirahama co-starred together in a reading drama “Moshimo Kimi ga.” back in 2011.

Speaking of Minegishi, she is known for her “unpopular character” as she states on the media how she is unpopular with guys even though she is one of the more popular members in AKB48. Thus, the fans of both Minegishi and Shirahama are agitated by the report.
Both Minegishi and Shirahama’s agencies did not make a comment regarding this issue, but they explained that “We heard they’ve been friends ever since they co-starred together
.”
Though AKB48 is known for their “no romantic relationship allowed” rule, AKS’s answer was that “We have not yet fully assessed the current situation.

AoA’s Hyejeong shares her thoughts on her acting debut in ‘Cheongdamdong Alice’

AoA‘s Hyejeong recently sat down for an interview following her final filming of the SBS drama ‘Cheongdamdong Alice‘ and shared her thoughts on her acting debut.
Hyejeong, who starred as Han Sae Kyung’s (Moon Geun Young) younger sister Sae Jin shared, “There were a lot of [interesting] aspects, and I liked that I could learn a lot from the experience. It was interesting because I experienced things for the first time like matching one’s eye level. Because there were a lot of scenes in which I appeared with my character’s family, I had more scenes in which I was listening rather than saying my own lines, so I learned a lot of methods about how to react. Geun Young unni taught me in a friendly manner how to position my eyes and the angle of my face. Although I can’t act, I worried that I would hear even worse criticisms. Although there was pressure, I received strength from the support of people around me.”
When asked which role from ‘Cheongdamdong Alice’ she would have liked to take on, Hyejeong chose Shin In Hwa (Kim Yuri). She explained, “At first I thought she’s only a cold, workaholic woman, but as I kept watching, she is a woman who knows how to love. Kim Yuri sunbae’s acting ability was also very good. It was a shame that I didn’t have any opportunities to act with her.”

AoA’s Hyejeong, who always dreamed of becoming a singer, lost the third round of a supermodel contest during high school and was cast on the street by her current agency manager on her way back home. Hyejeong also gave a shout out to her mother who secretly applied for the contest on her daughter’s behalf. The singer revealed, “My mom originally dreamed of becoming a celebrity and always told me that she’d wish that I fulfill her dream on her behalf. I found out that my mom sent in the application three days before the contest.”
Hyejeong then began her trainee period and made her debut as a member of AoA last August. She was cast in ‘Cheongdamdong Alice’ soon afterwards through an audition. Hyejeong expressed her love for both music and acting, stating, “There is an electric feeling when I perform on stage. My heart beats fast. I like that I can relate to people through acting. A few days ago, maybe because I missed the drama after it ended, I was thinking that I want to continue to act.”

Hyejeong also opened up about her experience going on fantasy dates with fellow idol stars on tvN‘s ‘The Romantic & Idol‘, revealing, “At first I went with the feeling of ‘I should have a good time and come back’, but after filming day after day, I started to feel burdened. After having a good time with each other as if [going on a college trip], when the staff asked who will I choose during the interview I went blank. Although it was a broadcast, I was too comfortable and [energetic], and I think that I should have been a little bit more careful.”
She also revealed that she does not go into the KakaoTalk chat room with the other guests from the show due to the fact that she doesn’t have a cellphone, adding, “I don’t know what they talk about in there.”
Hyejeong also revealed her goal to film action scenes. “I’m not athletic, but I think it will be a rewarding [experience]. Although it may be difficult to film even one scene, I will probably feel like I accomplished something.”
